China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO)

The China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) is a non-profit organization and hosts the secretariat for CCAN. CANGO was founded in 1992 and registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1993. End of 2010 CANGO had 142 member organizations across China. We are also NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. At the beginning of 2010, CANGO gained the honorary title “National Advanced Social Organization” by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Over the years CANGO has developed close working relations with 172 foreign NGOs and bilateral and multilateral organisations.

Our mission is to promote China’s civil society development and to provide a platform for exchange of experiences and information-sharing for Chinese NGOs.

Our focus is to work in Central and Western China with a strong focus on rural development, capacity building and environmental
protection, including climate change. Since 2008, the CCAN secretariat is based at CANGO.

Our climate change projects:

Green Commuting Network:

CANGO, together with the Environmental Defense Fund, initially launched this project in June 2006 and started promoting the concept of green commuting to reduce urban air pollution and negative health impacts. One year later the Green Commuting Network was launched with 20 NGO partners from cities all across China. In April 2008, we designed a green travel carbon calculator together with the Transportation Research Institute of Tsinghua University and initiated a campaign involving nearly one hundred enterprises, institutions, social organizations and communities and using the online calculator. In April 2009 we set up the Green Commuting Fund, officially approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The Green Commuting Fund supported low-carbon commuting at the Shanghai World Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games, inviting film stars and high-level government officials. Through these activities over those last few years we have significantly increased awareness about green and low-carbon commutingamong Chinese citizens and the government.

Climate Change Education Survey:

In this project we cooperate with the “Climate Change Learning Initiative - Mobilizing Action for Transforming Environments in Asia Pacific” which aims to work for capacity building of peoples to understand and respond to impacts of climate change. Another aim is to facilitate dialogues between people, educators and governments in Asia for effective climate change mitigation, adaptation, risk reduction and disaster preparedness. CANGO has carried out a climate change education survey in China to understand the climate change education activities conducted by NGOs, government and academics. Through the survey we learned that climate change education work still at an early stage in China. Most governmental departments have not yet made climate change education a priority. The contents for climate change education often only focus on disasters caused by climate change, with too little focus on solutions.

CCAN liaison person:

Ms. WANG Xiangyi, Deputy Director and Project Manager at CANGO’s project management department. In 2005, she obtained a Master Degree
from the Chinese Academy of Forestry. She previously worked as forestry program consultant at WWF’s Beijing office. In 2007, she joined CANGO and is responsible for the project management work focusing on environmental protection and corporate social responsibility (CSR). In 2007, she started to
engage in the preparation process of setting up the China Civil Climate Action Network (CCAN), and now functions as CCAN secretariat coordinator.
